The after-school care program has been discontinued at this time. Students and parents as well as the teachers have very much appreciated Laura Byrd’s time and commitment to our students. Kids love her, and parents are thrilled with the way youngsters respond to her guidance. Laura will continue to help with the dismissal process during the last half hour of each school day and will be given a gift of appreciation from LCA.

The school’s annual trip to the River Maze at Birchland Ocoee Farms will be on Wednesday, October 29. Drivers and chaperones are needed, so please call the school if you can join the student body and teachers for treks through soybean and corn mazes, a hayride, pumpkin picking, and picnicking along the river.

This year’s first deadline for box top submissions is October 31, so check your cereal boxes, yogurt containers, snack wrappers and diaper boxes before tossing them in the trash. LCA earns 10 cents for each box top. Just drop off your collection at the school office or pass it along to one of the students. Volunteers will prepare and mail the tops before the end of this month. For a complete list of branded products that qualify – such as Ziploc, Saran, Betty Crocker, Cottonelle, Kleenex, Scott, Viva, Kotex, Poise, Depend
and Hefty – check on line at boxtops4education.com.

The School Board voted once again to approve field trips for the entire student body to the Collegedale Branch library twice each month, typically every other Wednesday after fall break. Drivers are needed for each trip, leaving around 10:30 a.m. and returning before noon. Parents will be notified the Friday before a trip. Check the calendar on the school’s website for exact dates -apisonsdaschool.com.

Second-grader John Coulter snagged the coveted $100 ToysRUs giftcard from the local fire department’s prize drawing on Monday. (Many wonder if he plans to share his loot with big brother Jesse in the upper grades?) Everyone took home at least one treasure such as a water bottle, radio or frisbee while learning tips on fire safety.

Sarah Jackson was hired this year as a part-time teacher assisting Mr. Sargeant.
She’s no stranger to LCA after working as an SAU intern the past four years, even taking on janitorial tasks when needed. Sarah facilitates break-out groups and instructs the third-graders in math, among other responsibilities. She hails from Montana and is getting married in January.

Do you enjoy organizing and straightening? Consider volunteering to be the school librarian and keep our reading materials on the shelves and
up to date. See Mrs. Barto if you’re interested in an easy volunteer position with a minimal time commitment.

In light of the uncertain state of the economy right now, the size of our school and a history of limited sales in past years, LCA will not have a traditional fundraiser this year. Instead, pledge cards and an incentive gift currently are being designed. During the months of November and December, school supporters will be invited to prayerfully consider making a monthly or one-time promise of financial support to the school. More details will be forthcoming.

The sinks in both the girls’ and boys’ bathrooms will be replaced before year end. Countertops and single-handle faucets will be added to allow the students wash their hands quickly and effectively. Pass along a thank-you to School Board Chairman Eric Schoonard for the research and legwork on this project, as well as for organizing labor.

Posters and flyers are being printed to help spread the word about the Family Fair & Expo on Sunday, November 9. from 2 to 5 p.m. At this time, no musical group has been confirmed to perform during the event, but a few final calls are being made. The planning committee continues to work diligently to finalize plans and will soon begin recruiting volunteers. Questions?

My recent birthday served as a not-so-gentle reminder of my rapidly advancing years and induced me to consider if I have indeed learned anything worthy of sharing with others. Perhaps my desire to do so might be kindly tolerated . . .
± Almost nothing that looms ahead of you in life is as bad as it seems. And conversely, when fortune smiles, be prepared for a small glitch.
± Most things are not worthy of getting overly excited about because they’re not really that important anyway.
± People and experiences make the memory bank more valuable than the money bank.
± Nothing is more important in life than family, and good friends are family.
± Usually for every dream that is shattered or broken, God passes on a blessing. Sometimes the blessings are
a bunch of little ones that will not be recognized for their wonderful impact except in retrospect.
± Expect the unexpected.
± Don’t postpone writing
thank-you notes or wills.
± Each and every day is a gift from God.
± Get wise counsel. Pray. Wait awhile. Make your best choice, and don’t second-guess yourself.
± Joy is thinking of the wonderful expression on the face of God when He says,
“I can’t tell you how long I’ve been looking forward to this moment!”
± Eternity with God is worth any sacrifice.
± Kids will keep you eternally young, but exhausted!
