F A L L F E S T I V A L

LCA’s annual Family Fair and Expo is just around the corner on Sunday, October 11, from
12 noon to 4 p.m. The whole community is invited to come join the fun for all ages with carnival games, a stage maze, food, cotton candy, baked treats, fresh apple cider, an inflatable slide and the return of last year’s popular dunking booth! Admission fees – either cash or boxes of macaroni and cheese – will once again benefit the Samaritan Center. All other proceeds will go to the school.

A petting zoo and a book sale will be new features at this year’s event. Quality books promoting Christian values for reading levels Pre-K through 8th grade will be available to purchase just in time for Christmas gifts, and local authors will be on site to tell stories and share autographs. Payment can be made with cash or checks.
Don’t miss the opportunity to fellowship with school families and local community visitors in the school gym and on the ball field. For more information or to volunteer to help, call Noelle Holland or Tina Smith.

O F F I C E H O U R S

The hours for Administrative Assistant Lisa Jennings (mom of Mary Anne) have changed. She’s now in the school office each Monday from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Wednesdays from 8 to 10 a.m. Whenever possible, please try to stop in for school business during those hours. Keep in mind that teachers are required to answer phones and greet visitors when Lisa can’t be at the school, and classroom disruptions should be kept to a minimum.

S C H O O L F O R M S

All completed and signed registration forms need to be turned in to the school office as soon as possible. Student files must be kept current and up to date for legal as well as administrative purposes, and several LCA students are still missing important papers. If you have questions, please phone the school office at 236.4926 or see Lisa Jennings.

V O L U N T E E R S

Extra hands are needed at the school to help answer phones, bind handbooks, sort labels, prepare registration packets and lend assistance with other administrative tasks. Please call if you have time to help.

STUDENT WRITERS’ CORNER

Week of Prayer was a very fun and inspiring week. We sang every morning, and then Pastor Greg would preach his fascinating sermons. He told us very interesting stories and used very cool analogies. Our subject that week was prayer and the importance of it. We learned that God loves us very much and wants to talk to us.

One of the favorite things that week was that on Friday there was a guide dog called Penelope. Although she failed at her job, because all she wanted to do was play with her owner, she still knew lots of cool tricks, and was very obedient.

After worship, the pastor called us one by one and we told him a little about us. I think he knows us all a little better now. –- written by

The signs indicating one-way direction and limited speed for the drop-off and pick-up route around the school have been ordered and will be in place in the very near future.

N E W S T U D E N T S

Enrollment numbers jumped again as LCA registered two more students. Sisters Nadine (2nd grade) and Skylar (4th grade) Pittman boosted total student count to 48 after Labor Day. The family also donated a wooden loft to Mrs. Byrd’s room that has given the class much-needed extra space for play as well as study.

C O O N C L A P S

A round of applause goes to Daniel Thomas (dad of Isaac, Amber and Dominic) for creating a windshield ID sign for each school family to help with after-school pickup.

Kudos for Pastor Greg Daniel and Beth Scott (mom of Katie) for an inspirational Week of Prayer that blessed the entire student body.

Apison SDA Church generously donated monies from its Evangelism Fund to help offset expenses for the Family Fair and Expo, which is specifically designed to reach out the community and help local folks in need through the Samaritan Center.

Give a birthday shout-out to Mr. Sargeant. After Thursday, he’s just one year shy of six decades. Here’s wishing our principal a happy and healthy year!

HOW PARENTS HELP TEACHERS TIP #2

Prepare a happy after-school landing for your kids. Create a predictable ritual such as 15 minutes listening to them talk about their day – before you check messages, read the mail or begin dinner. That way you are fully present, and your child has a touchstone to count on between school and home. – PTA Parent June 2008

I T B S T E S T I N G

Achievement tests for third- through eighth-graders will begin on Monday, September 28. Parents are encouraged to make sure students who will be tested get extra rest, eat a healthy breakfast, and pack a healthy snack and lunch.

B O X T O P S

It’s Box Tops Time in Tennessee! LCA is saving Box Tops for Education with a goal for each classroom to earn $500. Coordinator Beth Scott (mom of Katie) reports that the school is off to a good start with more than $20 in tops to date. Each child that brings in a filled collection sheet to school by October 15 will receive a prize, and the classroom with the most Box Tops will earn a year-end surprise. Ask friends, coworkers and extended family to save Box Tops, which equal FREE money for our school.
Go to boxtops4education.com for product lists, coupons and ways to double Box Tops.

Due to excessive rain, Camping Under the Stars for K-2 families was postponed last weekend. Details including a new date and event schedule will be forthcoming.

This year’s fall field trip for K-8 will be on Tuesday, October 6 (or the 8th in case of rain). Students will trek through soybean and corn mazes and enjoy a hayride, pumpkin picking, and picnicking along the river at Birchland Ocoee Farms. Drivers and chaperones are needed.

March 20, 2009

F I E L D T R I P S
In February, our students had the opportunity to meet award-winning children’s book author Lola Schaefer, who was conducting writing classes at Southern Adventist University. She shared tips on making a story compelling, using figurative language and “showing instead of telling.”

On Tuesday this week, both classrooms visited the Archaeological Museum at SAU to see nearly 200 artifacts, objects, works of art and photographs from the Middle East. Students also viewed an exhibit of coins from Greece, Rome, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon and Israel covering 600 years of history.

The Board of the Native American Pow Wow on the River has reserved Friday, April 3, for all area schools to participate in its annual educational festival held in the First Tennessee Pavilion.
Demonstrations of handicrafts, trades, games, dances and instruments will be held between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Students also will experience native stories and music. Cost per child is $3 with no fee for teachers or adults. Free parking is available, and drivers are needed.

E D U C A T I O N A L A S S I S T A N C E F U N D D E C L I N E S

Like so many other investment accounts in our current economy, the fund that helps the Apison Church School provide educational assistance to students has decreased in value. Since the decision has been made not to withdraw monies from that fund at this time, the LCA School Board is now faced with a monthly deficit for helping families that need and depend on tuition subsidy. On their own, some parents cannot afford to pay the full cost for their children to attend our school.

The school’s most recent financial report, provided by new treasurer Mark Eirich, indicates that the Educational Assistance account will be in the red (negative) by more than $1,000 at the end of May.

Additionally, the electric bill for the school has been unusually high, and tuition income has dropped with several students leaving school due to family circumstances. Thankfully, temperatures are warming, and two students (one new and one returning) recently enrolled. Still, without a consistent increase in financial contributions, our school will struggle to remain open for the long term. Roughly $10,000 is needed each year, in addition to the Apison Church’s subsidy and the Lamb’s Offering, to keep the school operating in the black.

LCA’s teachers and board members realize that many individuals and families are battling their own financial struggles right now. At the same time, the board doesn’t want to miss an opportunity to raise awareness of the school’s needs. God has richly blessed our educational institution through generous supporters, and we humbly call upon you once again in our time of need. Without adding financial burdens or usurping money designated for the operation and administration of our local churches, we ask that you prayerfully consider making a financial contribution to the school, specifically for the Educational Assistance Fund.

The lives of our young people are being shaped and molded for God’s work each and every day through the Apison Church School. Please help us continue to offer such a marvelous resource to the future leaders of our local community and our world church. We can’t do it without you!

Tips for the Morning Commute
by Laura Byrd
I’m not a morning person. When my parents used to take me to school in the morning, the drive was often very quiet since none of us were fully awake yet. If this is a situation you find yourself in frequently, take advantage of the opportunity to hide God’s Word in your heart and in the hearts of your children. This is a great chance to break the silence by playing scripture songs or Biblical education songs (like books of the Bible, 10 commandments, etc.) for your kids. Who knows? Before long you might find that you are all singing along, even on those early morning rides.

M E S S A G E F R O M M R S. B A R T O
I’ve been back in the saddle for almost two weeks now and let me tell you, it feels good to return. I missed all my kids and all my parents, though I thoroughly enjoyed my time with my babies. I appreciate how well my class behaved in my absence. It was such a relief not to have to worry about them causing chaos for the substitute. Because of that, I was able to enjoy my leave to its fullest. I was told time and time again how much of a joy it was to be able to work with my students. Little Arleigh is full of grins and giggles and is growing fast, almost as fast as her big sister Aurelia. Just this week Aurelia has learned how to pray before her meals, and it is the most precious sight to see her fold her hands and look up at you with anticipation, as if to say, “It’s not time to eat yet, Mommy!” Even better is watching her stop in the middle of her meal, fold her hands and close her eyes, and babble for a few seconds, then look up at you with the biggest smile. Even though I don’t understand her prayer, God certainly does.

Next school year, I will be passing the administrative reins over to Mr. Sargeant. In my 12 years of teaching, I have been principal all but two years and I am ready to let someone else fill that role. I look forward to being able to spend more time with my family and at the same time, put a little more effort into my classroom. I’ve enjoyed working with our school board and am so grateful for all the help they have given to fill in the gaps where I lack skill or knowledge. I’m also grateful to Mr. Sargeant for being willing to take on the additional responsibilities. Thank you, my church and school family, for a great seven years at Apison.

All is well at the Barto house with mommy and baby home after only a week in the hospital following Arleigh Montana’s birth on December 27. Minor lung complications due to the three-week-early arrival by c-section were quickly resolved in the Neonatal ICU. Birth weight and length were 8 pounds, 4 ounces and 20.5 inches.
Big sister Aurelia loves the newcomer but doesn’t like to hear her cry. Daddy changed his mind about the name just hours before her birth – ask about the story if you haven’t heard it yet. J Mrs. Barto expects to return to the classroom on March 9.

A week ago Tuesday, Mr. Russell (Zachary and Byron‘s grandfather) did a Native American program for us.
He showed us many interesting things and did lots of demonstrations. Mr. Russell, a Cherokee Indian, came dressed in leggings he had made himself. He showed the school Native American tools for hunting. He took us outside and threw the addle-addle spear a long ways. The blowgun was incredible and accurate, too. He played songs on many different native flutes made of river cane. It was very lovely. — written byChelsea Rachel and Byron Russell

On Thursday, a young man by the name of Andrew Mashchak came to show us a wonderful presentation about dry ice. He told us that dry ice is made from compressed carbon dioxide. He did all kinds of cool experiments like making bubbles float and making bubbles filled with carbon. He told us all kinds of interesting things that will benefit our lives. We all enjoyed it very much. — written by Sidney Pitts

A P P R E C I A T I O N

To commemorate the end of Teacher Appreciation Week, Mrs. Barto and Mr. Sargeant will be honored during the main service this Sabbath at the Apison SDA Church. Come join the congregation if you can and feel free to stay for the church potluck afterwards.

Students and parents also want to send a shout out to part-time teacher Ms. Sarah (Jackson) for her big contribution to our little church school.

LCA is blessed to have such gifted and caring professionals committed to sharing knowledge and the love of Jesus with our kids.

S A U I N T E R N S

The following students from Southern Adventist University are providing assistance to our teachers this year:

Ms. Malia

Ms. Selena

Ms. Shannon

Mr. Anthony

Mr. Omar

These dedicated young adults also helped out during the Family Fair and Expo last Sunday. Our classrooms and events run much more smoothly due to their participation.

written by Leanne Barto

Praise the Lord! The 2008 Family Fair and Expo went above and beyond all of our expectations. Around 300 people visited the
event this year, more than double the attendance at last year’s
Bible Characters Costume Festival.

The overwhelming blessing we received was seeing how many community people came and how many church members participated in volunteering. The Spanish Church Pathfinders, Apison Pathfinders, Discovery Toys, Joshua’s House, a local mortgage company, Apison Women’s Ministry, the Science Guy and the Pollywog mission group for Bangladesh all had booths. Kids young
and old alike enjoyed the giant inflatable slide and jumper, dunking booth, wagon rides, carnival games, fresh popcorn, cotton candy and apple cider, tons of baked goods and pizza as well as fabulous burritos. While collecting 190 boxes of macaroni and cheese plus two cases of apples to donate to the Samaritan Center, LCA students and staff witnessed to others and increased awareness
of both our church and our school.

Many hours of planning and hard work made it possible to us to accomplish this community festival. LCA would like to especially thank the Planning Committee – Leanne Barto, Christy Beason,
Laura Byrd, Tina Segarra and Tina Smith, who were fondly nicknamed the “Estrogen Committee” – as well as their husbands David, Christopher, Arlen, Angel and Bo who volunteered (or rather were drafted) extensively. The school also extends heartfelt gratitude to Don Howe for providing wagon rides; our local Ace Hardware that donated the hay bales; the Fire Department members who showed up with a truck to give bucket rides; buddies who donated their time and talents for painting faces, creating a stage maze and scooping popcorn among a multitude of other tasks; students from SAU who joined in with willing hands; countless Apison Church members who baked goods, manned booths, prayed and came to the event; the good sports (Eric Schoonard and Tim Feig in addition to Bo) who let us dunk them repeatedly in 50-degree weather; school families that supported the event; and our community friends that came out for the fun and fellowship.

We look forward to even more growth for next year’s event and want you to know we couldn’t have done it without you. Thanks!

Research on education makes one thing clear – kids with a father involved at school have better grades, less discipline problems, and are more responsible. Here are some other reasons to be a presence in your child’s school:

LCA’s enrollment total has taken a jump to 29 with three new students joining the upper grades and increasing the total number in Mrs. Barto’s class to 13. We warmly welcome:

6th Christopher Hill

The after-school care program has been discontinued at this time. Students and parents as well as the teachers have very much appreciated Laura Byrd‘s time and commitment to our students. Kids love her, and parents are thrilled with the way youngsters respond to her guidance. Laura will continue to help with the dismissal process during the last half hour of each school day and will be given a gift of appreciation from LCA.

C O R N M A Z E

The school’s annual trip to the River Maze at Birchland Ocoee Farms will be on Wednesday, October 29. Drivers and chaperones are needed, so please call the school if you can join the student body and teachers for treks through soybean and corn mazes, a hayride, pumpkin picking, and picnicking along the river.

B O X T O P S

This year’s first deadline for box top submissions is October 31, so check your cereal boxes, yogurt containers, snack wrappers and diaper boxes before tossing them in the trash. LCA earns 10 cents for each box top. Just drop off your collection at the school office or pass it along to one of the students. Volunteers will prepare and mail the tops before the end of this month. For a complete list of branded products that qualify – such as Ziploc, Saran, Betty Crocker, Cottonelle, Kleenex, Scott, Viva, Kotex, Poise, Depend
and Hefty – check on line at boxtops4education.com.

The School Board voted once again to approve field trips for the entire student body to the Collegedale Branch library twice each month, typically every other Wednesday after fall break. Drivers are needed for each trip, leaving around 10:30 a.m. and returning before noon. Parents will be notified the Friday before a trip. Check the calendar on the school’s website for exact dates -apisonsdaschool.com.

F I R E S A F E T Y

Second-grader John Coulter snagged the coveted $100 ToysRUs giftcard from the local fire department’s prize drawing on Monday. (Many wonder if he plans to share his loot with big brother Jesse in the upper grades?) Everyone took home at least one treasure such as a water bottle, radio or frisbee while learning tips on fire safety.

T E A C H E R ‘ S A I D

Sarah Jackson was hired this year as a part-time teacher assisting Mr. Sargeant.
She’s no stranger to LCA after working as an SAU intern the past four years, even taking on janitorial tasks when needed. Sarah facilitates break-out groups and instructs the third-graders in math, among other responsibilities. She hails from Montana and is getting married in January.

Do you enjoy organizing and straightening? Consider volunteering to be the school librarian and keep our reading materials on the shelves and
up to date. See Mrs. Barto if you’re interested in an easy volunteer position with a minimal time commitment.

In light of the uncertain state of the economy right now, the size of our school and a history of limited sales in past years, LCA will not have a traditional fundraiser this year. Instead, pledge cards and an incentive gift currently are being designed. During the months of November and December, school supporters will be invited to prayerfully consider making a monthly or one-time promise of financial support to the school. More details will be forthcoming.

The sinks in both the girls’ and boys’ bathrooms will be replaced before year end. Countertops and single-handle faucets will be added to allow the students wash their hands quickly and effectively. Pass along a thank-you to School Board Chairman Eric Schoonard for the research and legwork on this project, as well as for organizing labor.

Posters and flyers are being printed to help spread the word about the Family Fair & Expo on Sunday, November 9. from 2 to 5 p.m. At this time, no musical group has been confirmed to perform during the event, but a few final calls are being made. The planning committee continues to work diligently to finalize plans and will soon begin recruiting volunteers. Questions?

Whether you are one of our school families or part of
our church family or a family that home schools, please join us for an evening of fellowship on Friday, September 26, from 6 to 8 p.m. on the ball field. LCA’s 7th and 8th graders will be selling food for a VERY reasonable price to raise money for their Outdoor Education trip the following week. You won’t have to cook supper if you come on out to talk with friends, let the kids run off their evening energy while playing, sing some fun songs and welcome in the Sabbath together with a short vespers program. Hope to see you there!

U N I F O R M S

Parents interested in an LCA uniform exchange program should contact Christy Beason (mom of Victoria, Jocelyn and Julianna) at 774.4717. Plans are in the works to designate
a location where collared shirts, slacks, shorts, belts, shoes and other items can be stored for year-round swapping. Share feedback on whether you prefer to sell or donate or trade with other families. Any and all suggestions are welcomed.

In October, Mr. Sargeant will return to Pioneer Valley Academy in Massachusetts for the first time since graduating 40 years ago. What a reunion! Safe travels, Mr. Sargeant.

The upper graders have designated the last Friday of each month for Barto Bucks Auctions. Next Friday, September 26, is the first “last Friday” since the printing press rolled off fresh new reward incentives (aka Barto Bucks) for this year. Class members are encouraged to look through their belongings at home to find items the other kids might be interested in bidding on and bring them to school – as long as it’s OK with Mom and Dad. Class auctions are a fun way to get kids’ rooms cleaned up at home while giving them a chance to spend some of their hard earned Barto Bucks.

written by Redmond Bandy

Last Monday, September 8, the upper graders (4-8) went on a field trip to North Carolina to watch these men band wild birds. The place was 2.5 hours away. Miss Barto, my teacher, had a few of the parents drive up to North Carolina.

When we arrived, we got out of our cars and started walking. About a fourth of a mile later, I saw a small shelter with three men sitting under it. Immediately, one of the men introduced himself as Mr. Nelson. Then he went right into his lecture about bird banding.

First of all, every morning at about 7:00, they hang up these six foot high, nylon nets. Then they sit down and wait. In about a half hour, they go and see if any birds are caught.

If there are not, then they move on to the next net. If there is, then they untangle the bird, put it in a little bag, and bring it back to the shelter. At the shelter, they measure the weight, height, species and age.

What is really cool is the how they find the bird’s age. What they do is wet the head, spread the feathers out over the skull so they can see its skull. If the skull is very developed, it is full grown. If its skull is still developing, it is young. Then the men put the little band on the bird’s ankle. If someone else captures the bird, they can go on the internet, put in the number on the band, and see where the bird has been seen.

After we learned all that, we went to our cars, ate lunch, and drove to the waterfall.

written by Mrs. Barto and Amber Brailsford

On the return from our bird banding experience, we stopped at Bald River Falls, just up the road from Tellico Plains. This is what Amber has to say about her experience there:

“When we left we had one more stop and that was the waterfall. It was so beautiful. When I was standing in the water it was pretty boring at first but then it got fun. Then I saw people jumping in the water. I thought, ‘Hey, I want to jump in the water too,’ but then I remembered I couldn’t swim! When I was just about to step back onto the platform, Jimmy pushed me into the water! I got so mad I was about to burst, but then I remembered God would not act this way and because of God, Jimmy has all his teeth!”

W E L C O M E B A C K

More than 80 students, parents and church members turned out for LCA’s Welcome Back to School Picnic last Friday evening on the ball field. After the haystack and watermelon feast and fun on the playground, a sudden thunderstorm encouraged everyone to quickly grab chairs and run into the gym for the song service with Brian Fox and Darryl Bentley. Pastor Daniel captured the attention of young and old alike as he shared an interactive and inspirational object lesson for vespers. Rain dampened clothes but not joyful spirits. Thanks to all who joined us!

LCA has a new mailing address for tuition checks this year. Please address correspondence to Box 87 at the Apison Post Office (zip 37302). This address replaces Box 417 at the Collegedale Post Office.

Don Stillwell is offering piano lessons at the school on Tuesdays for all levels of interest and skill. To sign up, please call 931.247.7781. Home-schooled youngsters as well as LCA students are welcome to participate.

Mr. Sargeant’s room hosts four pairs of siblings and a set of twin girls. Two goldfish and half of the class’s 16 students are new(*) while the other eight are returning:

Mr. Sargeant warmly welcomes the newcomers and greatly depends on the veterans who already know the ropes and provide a lot of help. He prays that each student will have a “fun and productive year while growing wiser, stronger and closer to God.”

U P P E R G R A D E S

No siblings (after last year’s three sets) and two girls (rather than one) bring a new balance to Mrs. Barto’s class of 10, which now includes fourth graders promoted from Mr. Sargeant’s room due to increased enrollment. Four newbies(*), two students from previous years(+) and two returning students round out the roster:

After three productive weeks, Mrs. Barto could not be happier about her “wonderful” students and feels “privileged to be able to participate in each one of their lives.” She also credits parents for “their participation, encouragement and support that keeps our school functioning at its best.”

LCA boasts a total of 26 registered students – up two from last year’s number.
How God has blessed!

A F T E R S C H O O L

For parents whose schedules make 3 p.m. pickup a challenge, LCA now offers supervised after-school care until 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 5 p.m. on Fridays. Apison Church member Laura Byrd coordinates the program to incorporate playtime, worship, crafts, hikes and community service. The cost is $5 per child per day, and two hours advance notice is requested.

The longevity of this newly introduced program depends on how many families make use of the after-school option. Multiple children must participate each day to cover the basic costs. So go ahead and do your grocery shopping, study for that exam, clean the kids’ rooms, schedule appointments, or pamper yourself with a little free time before dinner and bedtime. Payment is required at the end of each week, and checks should be made out to LCA with “after-school care” noted on the memo line. Remember parents – let’s use this great perk or we might lose it!

B O O K O R D E R S

Order forms for Scholastic Books are being sent home with students today. If you want to order, please return the form with payment by next Friday, September 5. LCA earns points towards supplies for each book ordered. As always, parents should use discretion when choosing children’s books from a secular company.

H O M E S C H O O L E R S

Young people in the Apison church family and community who are home schooled are invited to join the LCA Choir. Zuzana Rachal (mom of Chelsea and Andrew) directs the group each Thursday at 2 p.m. in the school’s Assembly Room. Other parents with musical talents are invited to assist during practices as well.
Come blend your voices with ours to make beautiful music and direct praises heavenward.

LCA also extends an invitation for home scholars to be on the call list for field trips and upcoming events. Just see Mrs. Barto to have your name added to the list.

Please note there is a new yearly fee that the Georgia-Cumberland Conference requires us to collect for Home School Student School Participation Insurance. The annual amount is $13.25 for each Pre-K and Kindergarten homeschooler and $24 for each homeschooler in grades
1-8 involved in any LCA school activities, including music opportunities and outings. Who knew choir could be a dangerous activity? But rules are rules, so please request a form at the school office.

S W I M C L A S S E S

Southern Adventist University is offering swimming lessons at the campus pool for children ages 4-14. Classes based on American Red Cross curriculum will start on September 8 and continue on Mondays and Wednesdays for 10 weeks. Choose between two sets of classes at 3:20-4:05 p.m. and 4:15-5:00 p.m. Cost per child is $65 with a $5 discount for a second child and $10 off fees for third and fourth children. Contact Aquatic Director Bob Benge at 236.2855 or the Physical Education Office Secretary at 236.2820. Classes fill up quickly, so please register early.

N E W A R R I V A L

The Barto family will expand once again around Christmas or New Year’s, and it’s another girl! David breathed a sign of relief during the ultrasound, since he’s grown rather fond of little ladies after 18 months with Aurelia. Maybe it hasn’t hit home yet that he’s going to be outnumbered 3 to 1! The new baby’s bones, heart, lungs and brain looked perfect on the scan, but gender confirmation created the most excitement for Leanne. A name has been chosen and it’s not a secret – Helen Elizabeth, after David’s Grandma Barto. She’ll be called Eliza.

Tennessee law requires the use of booster seats for young children. Please read the following and make sure you are in compliance. Any field trip we take will require you bringing your child’s booster seat. There will not be any exceptions.

Any child 4 through 8 years old, measuring less than 5 feet in height must be in a belt positioning booster seat, in the rear seat, if available.

Provision is made for the transportation of children in medically prescribed modified child restraints.

Children aged 9-12 or any child trhough12 years of age measuring 5′ or more in height must use a seat belt system and is recommended to ride in the rear seat, if available.

Children aged 13-15 must us a passenger restraint system.

The driver of the car is responsible for making sure that children under age 16 are properly restrained and may be charged and fined $50 for violation of the law. If the child’s parent or legal guardian is responsible for making sure that the child is properly transported and may be fined for non-compliance.

Boosters Are For Big Kids

Did you know most kids need to ride in a booster seat from about age 4 until at least age 8?

If you child isn’t using a booster, try this simple test the next time you ride together in the car.

Does the child sit all the way back against the auto seat?

Do the child’s knees bend comfortably at the edge of the auto seat?

Does the belt cross the shoulder between the neck and the arm?

Is the lap belt as low as possible, touching the thighs?

Can the child stay seated like this for the whole trip?

If you answerd “no” to any of these questions, your child needs a booster seat to ride safely in the car. Kids like booster seats because they can be more comfortable, too!
